How salary tax slabs work

Tax year 2026-27 · Updated Sep 22, 2026 · TaxGuide

A salaried slab is not a flat percentage of your whole salary.

Each row in the First Schedule covers a band of taxable income. Inside that band, tax is a fixed amount plus a percentage of the income above the start of the band. The fixed amount is the tax already produced by the earlier bands.

TaxGuide stores those rows in a versioned rule set. The salary calculator reads the published set for the year you pick. It does not keep a second copy of the rates in the page.

Two checks matter when you read a result:

If salary is not the right head of income for your case, these slabs may not be the ones that apply. The estimate is not an assessment.
